DAVID WILSON
David’s early musical training was in piano and violin through private lessons and school music programs. He showed an ever-increasing interest and capacity in many forms of musical expression, teaching himself instruments of interest such as guitar and Celtic harp, forming musical ensembles and, always, teaching others.
David Wilson first began studying violin with Paul Meyer (Toronto Symphony Orchestra), and while at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music he studied under Jacques Israelievitch. He graduated in 1999 (B.Mus) and immediately began to explore outside of the academic environment, taking on recording projects for others, producing vocal and instrumental albums.
At the same time, David opened a music studio and began to accept private students. He performed for a number of years in community orchestras, yet because David was most passionate about the experience of chamber music, he formed and managed a string quartet in which he played violin. His interest in teaching and learning music found expression as a Music Instructor for the Toronto District School Board. Such a variety of interests allowed David to round out his music production skills with experience in recording engineering, graphic design and writing.
In 2002 David developed a web-based forum through which he provided advice and instruction on a number of music and violin related topics. It was through this contact with a wide variety of musicians and students that he began to consider what types of instructional tools he might have enjoyed as a student, and what would assist him in his role as a teacher. It was at this time that David became aware of the lack of a criterion performance of Kreutzer’s 42 Studies, a work which had always been so highly regarded by Mr. Israelievitch.
A natural outcome of these events was that, in 2004, David founded Stringology Music Studios. His collaboration with Jacques Israelievitch on the Kreutzer 42 Studies project allowed David to apply many of his musical skills at the highest level. He continues to plan projects for Stringology Music Studios which will provide violin students with the resources they will need to develop resilient and abiding musical skills.
In 2005, while continuing to teach violin privately, David began to teach in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) as an Itinerant Music Instructor for strings. Having gained experience in the classroom, David realized his passion for music education in this setting, and in the autumn of 2008 he returned to school, to the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, University of Toronto (OISE/UT). David will have completed his teacher certification at OISE/UT in the spring of 2009. |
